3-MINUTE TRAVEL GUIDE:BARCELONA, SPAIN

DON’T FORGET TO PACK Copies of prescriptions (including the one from your eye doctor for glasses or contact lenses). Adapters for small electronics like your tablet or phone. Color copies of the signature page of your passport to carry in your wallet (useful for verifying your identity without having to carry your passport everywhere). Before you leave, check whether any over-the-counter medication you regularly need will be available in Spain. Some common medicines like ibuprofen are only available with a prescription. You may be able to bring a small amount into the country, but be sure it’s in the original container so it’s easily identifiable by customs agents. Finally, bring some Ghirardelli bars. It may sound strange, but they make great presents for new friends, you can’t get them in Spain, and they’re easily packed.

BEST LEFT AT HOME Appliances like hair dryers or straighteners. Spain doesn’t have the voltage for them and converters can be faulty and even ruin the appliance. You can get dual-voltage versions in the US or just buy one in Europe when you arrive.

WHERE TO LIVE Near a metro stop! While the city’s transit cards work on any form of public transportation, the metro line is the fastest and most convenient way to get around. As for which neighborhood to live in, districts like the Eixample, Gràcia, and Sants are good places to look for housing.

BEST EATS NEAR CAMPUS Veggie Garden is a vegan Indian-Nepalese restaurant near Plaça Universitat with delicious food and student-friendly prices. DeLaCrem is just behind the central UB campus and has amazing seasonal ice cream flavors. If you’re interested in trying traditional Catalan food, take a short walk to the Sant Antoni neighborhood. It has tons to offer from old-school restaurants to trendy bars.

FAVORITE SPANISH ACTIVITY In late winter, people hold calçotades, or outdoor group meals featuring roasted green onions called calçots. These are peeled and dipped in romesco sauce before eating. Neighborhood associations (“associacions de veïns” in Catalan) often hold large calçotades to raise money, with tickets at around €10. This is a great way to build local spirit while trying a beloved Catalan tradition.

BEST LOCAL EVENT Sant Jordi, which is on April 23rd every year, is the feast day of Catalonia’s patron saint. The streets fill with stands selling books and roses, and famous authors participate in signings throughout the day. It’s a magical and unforgettable day.

WHERE TO STUDY Both UB and UPF have picturesque and central libraries. You can also check out the city library in your neighborhood – there are 40 throughout Barcelona, many of them in beautiful modern or restored historic buildings and worth the effort to locate. Finally, if you like to accompany your studying efforts with a mug of café or té, you can usually use the Wi-Fi at inexpensive chains like 365 or indie cafés like Onna in Gràcia.

MUST-TRY LOCAL DISH Seafood fideuà (similar to paella, but with short noodles called “fideus”) with aïoli is my all-time favorite. I also love croquetas: they come in so many flavors and it’s fun trying them all.

BEST PHOTO OP The church at Tibidabo is like Barcelona’s north star. Every night it illuminates the city from a perch atop the Collserola mountains. The views couldn’t be better, and Tibidabo’s old-time amusement park is a fun place to spend a few hours.

yga0z
BIGGEST FAIL Using the blue Aerobus to travel to the airport from Plaça Catalunya. Ugh! These buses are super visible and convenient, but your metro pass will let you take the R2 train or the 46 bus from equally central locations without the €12 round-trip fee.

BUY THIS Avarques (also spelled avarcas, abarcas or albarcas in Spanish) are comfy sandals from the Balearic Islands. They’re great for the warmer months and make a cool souvenir.

NOT THAT Don’t buy or eat anything off of Las Ramblas!

MOST INTERESTING CLASS I took Catalan Dialectology and Catalan Judaism while in Barcelona. I highly recommend choosing courses that aren’t offered at home in California. It makes the experience that much more unique!

FAVORITE UCEAP TRIP Visting Besalú, a medieval town with a restored Jewish quarter.

BEST PART OF THE PROGRAM The people I met! Some of them are still among my closest friends.

UNFORGETTABLE WEEKEND TRIPS Donostia (San Sebastián) in the Basque country was one of my favorites – beautiful landscapes and some of the best cuisine in the world![……]

The Most Fun and Exciting Ways to Travel Australia

As you guys know, I was born in New Zealand and have visited Australia quite a few times. Some of my family actually live up in Toowoomba. Anyway, Australia is a massively popular tourist destination. And not only that, it’s just a massive country. People forget that you can pretty much fit all of Europe into Australia.

So, what’s the best way to explore Australia? Maybe you want to follow the nature and see animals that are found nowhere else on earth? Or perhaps you want to explore the country through its wine? There’s so many different ways to travel Australia that it can be overwhelming. But here are some of my top ways to experience Australia. Hopefully they’ll give you a little bit of inspiration from your trip to Oz.

The Best Ways to Travel Australia

Solo Travel in Australia

Australia is SUCH a fun country for solo travel! There are plenty of hostels full of fellow solo travellers and the locals are extremely friendly. But be sure to plan your solo trip carefully to make sure you stay in reputable/safe hostels and dodge the party hostels when you need a bit of R&R.

Also, Australia is an easy place to start for first time solo travellers from the West. Everyone speaks English and you have all the comforts of being at home, but maybe a few more spiders/snakes to worry about.

Sydney always makes a great start to a solo journey. You can visit the Opera House, Bondi Beach and Harbour Bridge. Then travel to Queensland and experience the Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Island and Gold Coast. Maybe visit Uluru/Ayer’s rock. Head West and check out Perth and Margaret River.

You could literally spend a year just exploring Australia. And after solo travelling around Oz you’ll return home with a TONNE of new friends and incredible stories to tell.

Explore Australian Vineyards

I’m pretty sure I know a few people who might prefer this way of travelling Australia! Who doesn’t love a glass (or bottle) or two of wine when on holiday? So why not have your entire trip dedicated to tasting the delicious fermented grape juice. After all, Australia produces some great wines (mostly Shiraz and Chardonnay).

There are plenty of famous and little-known wine regions in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. Some of the most popular are Hunter Valley, Yarra Valley, Barossa Valley, Margaret River and Coonawarra. I have been informed by a Ozzie that Orange, NSW has also become a great wine-tasting area. So book a boozey tour and make sure that you hire a driver!

Eco Volunteering in Australia

You can volunteer in Australia to help conserve the Great Barrier Reef. You will get to take part in marine conservation, research and diving (if you’re qualified, of course). If you’re not qualified you can get your diving qualifications while in Australia.

There are obviously plenty of other ways to volunteer in Australia but I think the conservation of the Great Barrier Reef is incredibly important. If you’re a diver or a water-baby then you’ll know exactly what I mean. With the rising water temperatures and the coral bleaching, there is a lot to be done to help preserve this giant natural wonder of the world.

Plus, imagine the tan you’d have after a couple of months!;)

Cruise the Coast

Cruises are an incredibly popular way to travel. They’re perfect for anyone who wants to visit multiple destinations but who doesn’t want the hassle of organising everything themselves. Cruising the coastline of Australia is a great way to see the fabulous sights of this country. Cruise ships leave from the major cities of Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.

You can even add on an extra country too depending on the cruise you choose. There are always many opportunities to leave the ship and visit the landmarks of Australia like the Great Barrier Reef, uninhabited islands, pristine beaches etc. But make sure you bring some travel sickness tablets, just in case! Though they are always available on board, along with pretty much anything else you could ever need.

Road Trip Australia

Road tripping is one of my favourite ways to travel and Australia is no different. Road tripping Australia is a great option for those who like a little more freedom and those who want to taken in the more “off the beaten track” sights/destinations. You never know what little towns or beautiful landscapes you’ll stumble upon on a road trip.

The Great Ocean Road is a stunning 250 km route in Victoria, filled with beautiful beaches, sea stacks, and wildlife. There are tonnes of great places to stop along the route like Loch Ard Gorge, 12 Apostles, The Grotto, surf supply shopping outlets AND Bells Beach mentioned in the original Point Break movie (though not actually filmed there).

You could also rent a campervan (never a Wicked one though, thanks! They’re vile. I recommend Jucy) and travel from Sydney to Brisbane. The drive takes around 9 hours if you drive without stopping but why would you ever do that? Drag the drive out over two or three days and see the sights.

If you are planning on using your phone as a Sat-Nav on your journey, remember to take your phone cradle with you, as the same laws about mobile phone use whilst driving also apply in Australia and the police are pretty strict about it.[……]

0vck7
Explore Our Family Travel To Greece Guide

One of the greatest things about family travel to Greece is the diversity of experiences that it offers. This southern European country is baked in history that dates back thousands of years, and the atmosphere of the country changes dramatically from region to region and island to island.

From the blue rooftops of Santorini to the Athena Parthenon in Athens, Greece is a breathtaking destination that is as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the belly. With 4,500 years of history loaded with some of the most fascinating mythology to have been put to words, Greece is an epic destination that should be on every family travel lover’s radar.

Whether you’re planning on taking a road trip through the mainland to places such as Mythras or taking a Greek island-hopping cruise between Mykonos and Milos, family travel in Greece offers an unforgettable array of adventures.

Tips For Family Travel in Greece

Greece is an absolutely wonderful country for family travel. Whether you’re enjoying multi-generational travel or travel with kids, Greece hits a little bit differently. The people are warm, caring, and generous, and the landscapes and scenery are beyond words.

And then there’s the food. Greek food is famous around the world for a good reason. It’s healthy, delicious, and packed with flavor.

Here are a few things to know before you travel to Greece to help make your visit easier. If you’re new to international family travel, I highly recommend checking out our well-researched trip planning resources. It’s full of proven family travel hacks.

Currency in Greece

Greece is a member of the European Union and uses the Euro as its primary currency. The value of one US dollar is approximately 0.90 Euros. This rate can change depending on the market. You can check the current value of the Euro here.

Capital of Greece

The Capital of Greece is Athens. Draped in the tapestry of ancient history and modern energy, Athens stands as a historic gateway to the heart of Greece. As the cradle of Western civilization, this city boasts iconic landmarks like the Acropolis and Parthenon, inviting visitors to step back in time. Among its bustling streets and lively neighborhoods, Athens blends its rich historical heritage with a contemporary urban charm, promising an enriching journey through the ages.

Electricity In Greece

Greece uses the Europlug Type C and Type F plugs. Type C plugs consist of two round prongs, and type F plugs include two round prongs and a grounding pin. Type F plugs are essentially an earthed version of Type C plugs. You can find our favorite power adapter here, which will allow you to use your electronics in Turkiye.

Cellular Phone Service In Greece

Greece has a well-developed cellular service infrastructure with widespread accessibility in urban areas, towns, and major roadways. Major cities like Athens and Thessaloniki and popular islands, including Crete and Santorini, typically have reliable mobile network coverage for voice calls and data services. However, more remote and rural areas might have less consistent coverage. It’s important to note that the availability and quality of cellular service can vary depending on the location. I recommend checking with local mobile service providers or official sources for the most accurate and up-to-date information. I have used the Airalo eSim app for all of my international travel.

Roads, Driving, and Public Transit

Roads and highways in Greece are well-maintained. The landscapes and geography of this large country mean that driving conditions can change dramatically based on the location and the time of year you’re visiting. In the coastal areas, warmer weather is the norm. Driving in Greece is relatively straightforward outside of the challenges of driving in ancient cities, where car access is an afterthought rather than a plan.

Travel in Greece with Kids

Traveling to Greece with children offers an enriching blend of history and adventure as young minds explore ancient ruins, mythical landscapes, and charming villages. The warm Mediterranean climate and picturesque beaches create an ideal family bonding and relaxation setting, while the kid-friendly activities and welcoming locals ensure a memorable experience for both young and old. From mythical tales to cultural discoveries, Greece provides an educational and captivating journey that sparks curiosity and creates lasting family memories.

What Language Is Spoken In Greece?

The main language in Greek is Greek. English is widely spoken within the country as well, especially in major cities and areas with large tourist infrastructure. Over 51% of Greeks speak English, so most visitors will find it easy to navigate.

Important Greek Words To Know:

Yes: Νai

No: Ochi

Thank You: Efcharistó

Thank You Very Much: Efcharistó polý

You’re Welcome: Parakaló

Please: Sas parakaloúme

Excuse Me: Me synchoreís

Hello: Geiá sou

Goodbye: Antio sas

Bathroom: Toualéta

How To Stay Connected And Get Internet And Phone Service In Greece

Most major cities throughout Europe have excellent cellular service. If you have an older phone, I highly recommend purchasing a sim either at the airport or as one of your first stops on your travels.

If you have a newer eSim capable phone, you can save yourself time by purchasing an eSim ahead of time and having it activated before you arrive.[……]

The Ultimate Guide to Driving Up To Malaysia

View of the road leading to Kuala Lumpur.
View of the highway leading in to Kuala Lumpur.

That first road trip to JB has become a time honoured rite of passage for many Singaporeans, but it’s important to be abreast of the ever changing rules, regulations and roads. Here’s what you need to take note of on your driving adventure.

Where to go?

There are two main arteries that cut through the length of Malaysia: the North South Highway (NSH) is more popular and leads to Malacca and KL, while the Eastern Coastal Route offers some idyllic views of the South China Sea.

Map showing interesting places in Malaysia, with distance from Singapore shown.
Here are some of the interesting places each route presents:

North South Highway

Johor – Perhaps the most well-known destination for Singaporeans, Singapore is connected to the state of Johor via two bridges. Known as a shopping and food haven for many, the city centre can get pretty congested especially on weekends.

Malacca – A seaside town made up of a mostly Chinese community, Malacca is a popular tourist destination. Jonker Street is where much of the tourism is centred as it forms a nexus for food and souvenir hunters.

Kuala Lumpur – The capital of Malaysia and home of the Petronas Twin Towers, for those looking for some fine dining and night life, the capital is where it’s at.

Kuala Lumpur’s food culture is diverse and a must-try.

Ipoh – What used to be a tin mining town, this city has become another epicentre of Malaysian food culture after Penang. There are cave temples as well as colonial architecture for the hobby photographer’s delight. And did we mention the food?

Penang – This island is served by the E28 bridge that stretches 24km over the water from the main peninsula and offers incredible views when entering (or leaving) the island at sunrise and sunset. Having personally done this trip myself, I can attest to the beauty of the island and its rich diverse heritage. And yes, the food is excellent as well.

Eastern Coastal Route

Kota Tinggi – Situated relatively close to Singapore, this small town in the state of Johor offers a quick day trip getaway. Drive to Desaru beach for an unobstructed view of the South China Sea or visit the nearby waterfall.

Tioman Island –Tioman Island holds some of the best diving sites in Malaysia. Parking is available at the jetty in Mersing (on the mainland) with 24 hours security so your wheels will be reasonably safe. If you’re a navy buff and diving enthusiast, you’ll be pleased to know that you can explore the remains of Britain’s most powerful WW2 battleships, HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales, here in Tioman’s beautiful tranquil waters.

Perhentian Islands – Like Tioman Island, the main attraction of this place is its beautiful beaches and poster sunsets. Due to the monsoon seasons, this heavenly destination is only open between April to October so you will need to plan accordingly.

Pahang – Further up from the last destination on the list, the state of Pahang offers many attractions along the Eastern route. Balok is a popular seaside destination where several seafood restaurants reside.

Terengganu – Like Pahang, this state offers numerous attractions and activities that are difficult to sum up in this short description. All along this route, there are several camping sites next to unspoilt beaches where you can stop, pitch a tent and have a barbeque by the sea with your family as you wind down with some sundowners with the cool sea breeze as a backdrop.

Preparing for your trip

Making the right preparations before embarking on a road trip will lessen the impact of any hiccups that might occur on your trip, so here’s a short list of things to prep before your trip.

VEP (Vehicle Entry Permit) – The hot topic on the minds of every Singaporean tourist driving into Malaysia is the implementation of the VEP. If you haven’t registered for the VEP, you should do so here before even heading towards the border. Cars that cross the border without any proof of having registered for their VEP can be fined upwards of RM$300. Once you have registered for the VEP, the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) will contact you via email to head down to one of their collection centres to have your RFID tag installed. Here’s a complete guide on the VEP process. The VEP RFID tag will cost RM$10.

Touch ‘n Go Card – Basically the Malaysian equivalent of our ERP Cashcard, this is an essential payment mode for tolls and parking in Malaysia. If you don’t already have one, the cards can only be purchased if you enter Malaysia through the Tuas Immigration Checkpoint at a kiosk just before the Malaysian Immigration Building.

Malaysian SIM Card –The three major telcos in Malaysia are Celcom, Digi and U-mobile and there are numerous kiosks within town centres where you can purchase their SIM cards. Here’s where you can find the stores for U mobile and DIGI. If you already have a Malaysian SIM card that isn’t expired, top-up coupons are available at certain petrol stations along the North-South Highway. Alternatively, there are numerous data roaming plans by local telcos with pretty decent rates. Here’s a detailed guide on Singapore’s data roaming plans.

Insurance – Having an adequate insurance coverage will do wonders by giving you a peace of mind on your holiday. NTUC Income’s Drivo car insurance provides comprehensive coverage for both driver and passengers in the event of an accident. The policy will also connect you with 24 hour emergency services and road assistance when needed. Additionally, having travel insurance, such as Income’s FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance, will help to ensure that you can stay protected against losses due to food poisoning, robbery and more. With travel insurance by the hour, you can go on your trip with a peace of mind.

Car maintenance – Before heading out, make sure to do a thorough check on your car’s fluids, tires, tools, etc. Better yet, bring it in to your mechanic and get a professional to look over your car if you haven’t done it in a while.

Driving in Malaysia

Driving in other countries is vastly different from driving here in Singapore. While it might be daunting, just smile and always be courteous, and more often than not, you’ll be surprised at how generous and helpful strangers can be.

Driving etiquette – While cutting people off and being cut off when lane changing in Singapore is the norm, it’s best to adopt good driving etiquette when driving overseas. If you’ve driven enough in Malaysia, you’ll be surprised to learn that most Malaysian drivers are pretty considerate. Indicate right when you’re in the fast lane on the NSH, and more often than not, the Malaysian driver will let you pass. And if he/she does, make sure to give a wave to show your appreciation.

Speed limits – The posted speed limits on the NSH is 110kmh but most local drivers go way above that. Speed demons have been known to clock in excess of 250kmh on the NSH. If you’re in the fast lane, check your mirror every few seconds to make sure no one is coming up fast from behind. If you do see someone approaching at high speed, do the decent thing – signal left and give way at the earliest opportunity. There are no winners in a high speed collision.

Parking – When choosing a parking spot, be sure to park in a well-lit area or at least not far from other cars. If you’re parking anywhere overnight, it’s smart to take a few more precautions. Invest in a steering lock made of solid steel and disconnect your battery if you’re leaving your car parked for a long time (e.g. heading to Tioman Island). Criminals are typically looking for easy targets, so do anything to make your care a less enticing mark.

It’s also important to plan your route carefully, so that you don’t drive for more hours than you can handle. Make sure to take your car’s range into account when planning this and take frequent fuel stops, instead of waiting for the ‘fuel low’ warning light to come on.

With the right prep, a Malaysia road trip could be your next adventure.

What to do if you’re involved in an accident?

Stay calm and assess yourself and your passengers to see if anyone is injured. If someone is injured, make sure their injuries are not life-threatening. If they are, call one of the emergency numbers listed below. Take note of all the injuries suffered by all parties and take photos if possible. If there are no injuries, drive the vehicles to the road shoulder after taking photos of the accident.

Call your insurance company for assistance. For drivers insured with NTUC Income’s Drivo Car Insurance, the 24-hour hotline number is +603 7965 3865.

DO NOT move either vehicle (if the accident involved another party) until photos have been taken of the accident. Take as many as you can and try to capture both close up photos of the vehicles as well as the whole scene. Include road markings if they help to prove your case. Make sure to include the number plates of all vehicles involved in the accident.

Secure your dash camera footage by ejecting the memory card or turning the power off if you’re going to be driving your car after the accident.

Exchange particulars (Full name, NRIC no., Contact number, Home address and name of insurer) with all parties involved in the accident. If you had an accident with a Malaysian car, make sure to take a photo of the owner’s driving license and road tax sticker as an added measure of identification.

There have been a recent spate of scammers working with rogue workshops causing an accident in order to con unsuspecting drivers to pay exorbitant amounts for towing services or car repair. Some even go as far as to hold your car ransom until they are paid. Gullible Singaporeans tend to be easy targets. DO NOT under any circumstances let your car be towed by a random tow truck or one that you don’t recognise as this might complicate your insurance claim later.

Take note of these emergency numbers while in Malaysia:

Police and Ambulance: 999

Fire brigade: 994

Accidents: 991

St John’s Ambulance: 03-9285-1576

NTUC Income emergency hotline: +603 7965 3865

Road trips can be a great way to see and experience a country, but we can’t stress enough how important it is to be prepared for any emergency. Make sure insure with a good insurance plan, like Income’s DrivoTM Car Insurance, so that you’re covered in case of a traumatic accident especially when you’re overseas.

With the proper preparations and safety precautions, a road trip in Malaysia (or any other country) can be an enjoyable and memorable experience and you will soon discover why so many Singaporeans have made that trip.[……]
